How Much Does Clutter Cost You?

In an article written by Amanda Enayati a ‘Homes Contributor’ writer for Yahoo titled “Why clutter matters and decluttering is difficult”, she said “Clutter is expensive: It costs an average of $10 per square foot to store items in your house and almost 10% of American households rent storage units, spending more than $1,000 annually in rent”. Over years hoarding could end up costing you thousands of dollars!

To find the money that you are losing per square foot (to further put Enayati’s statement into perspective), divide the monthly cost of your residence by the square footage. This will produce the value of your property per square foot. Then, add up the square footage of your unusable cluttered rooms and multiply it by the value of your property per square foot, this is the monetary value of your lost home space. A lot of people have a little clutter here and there but in some households clutter can become so bad that it leads to health issues, injury, a deteriorating home, and or financial issues. One additional negative impact of clutter that may be overlooked is the cost. For people with these issues, the cost of hoarding cleanup is well worth the price.

THESE FACTORS INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:

  • Property size
  • Location of property
  • Type of property
  • Functionality of major amenities (e.g. water, electricity, heat, plumbing)
  • Materials to be disposed of
  • Method of disposal
  • Sanitation supplies (personal protective equipment (PPE), biowashers, air scrubbers, etc.)
  • Number of crew members needed
  • Time needed to complete cleanup

Cost factors explained:

PROPERTY SIZE:

The size of the area that needs to be cleaned increases effort and time spent by the crew.

LOCATION OF PROPERTY:

The location of the property can increase the cost of transportation.

TYPE OF PROPERTY:

Some properties are more difficult to clean than others because of the way they are designed or the laws that regulate the standards by which that type of property must be cleaned.

FUNCTIONALITY OF MAJOR AMENITIES:

The availability of certain amenities on the property e.g. water, electricity, heat, and plumbing effect the supplies that we need to bring ourselves to perform the project.

MATERIALS TO BE DISPOSED & METHOD OF DISPOSAL:

Both factors are important to consider when calculating hoarding cleanup costs in the presence of biohazards. Especially in cases of Animal Hoarding or Senile Squalor, biohazards such as feces, urine, vomit, blood, and other bodily fluids present health hazards to those who come in contact with contaminated areas and items. Only highly-trained, certified technicians, like ours, should handle biohazards. Proper precautionary measures like PPE and safe disposal techniques should be practiced during every hoarding cleanup and clutter cleanup project.

SANITATION SUPPLIES:

PPE, biowashers, air scrubbers, and other sanitation methods are required to properly and legally complete some projects.

NUMBER OF CREW MEMBERS NEEDED:

Some projects require more crew members than others. The amount of crew members needed for a project depends in part on the size and type of property and the functionality of major amenities.

TIME NEEDED TO COMPLETE CLEANUP:

How much a hoarder wants to be personally involved in the process also factors into pricing. For instance, simple junk or trash hauling with no client involvement uses less time and resources than full-on organization and sorting service.

Another important aspect to consider while calculating hoarding cleanup costs depends on whether or not biohazards are present. Especially in cases of Animal Hoarding or Senile Squalor, biohazard cleanup such as feces, urine, vomit, blood, and other bodily fluids present health hazards to those who come in contact with contaminated areas and items. Only highly-trained, certified technicians, like ours, should handle biohazards.
